Tony Canzoneri vs Ike Williams at 135lb: Who Wins?
Williams was a monster in the lightweights and no matter how versatile Canzoneri was, being among the few first multi-division champion fighters, I don't think he could have stood up to the power and rugged toughness of Ike who even held a win over the likes of Kid Gavilan, Beau Jack, Bob Montgomery, Johnny Bratton, Enrique Bolanos, Joe Miceli, Tippy Larkin and Juan Zurita. His major losses came only to Willie Joyce to whom he lost thrice early in his career. Bob Montgomery who stopped him in their first fight, Sammy Angott with whom he went 1-1, Gavilan with whom he went 1-2 and Jimmy Carter to whom he lost his world lightweight title. But to Canzoneri's credit, he was only stopped once in his 24 career losses, in his last fight versus Al Bumy Davis, many of his losses coming by decision to the likes of Jimmy McLarnin, Barney Ross, Lou Ambers and Johnny Jadick. He held wins over Benny Bass, Al Singer and Jackie Berg from whom he originally won his featherweight, lightweight and junior welterweight titles and Ambers whom he beat to temporarily regain the lightweight belt only to lose to him twice in rubber matches. Tony also beat Kid Chocolate, baby Arizmedi, Frankie Klick and McLarnin in their first fight.
At 135 lbs., I think Williams would be way too powerful and tough against Canzoneri and I think prime for prime, Williams would have beaten Canzoneri by late round KO or TKO.
