Discover the Proud Heritage of Thai Silk at the Resplendent Jim Thompson House in Bangkok
Considered the heart of Bangkok's social scene in its heyday the Jim Thompson House remains just as popular today despite and perhaps because of the legend behind its owner's mysterious disappearance. The stunning Thai style home of silk pioneer James H.W. Thompson is a popular Bangkok stopover not merely due to the enigma that surrounds its owner but also due to its inherent architectural beauty and the collection of antiques the house contains. Tucked away within the lush environs of a landscape thick in tropical foliage lies the combination of six traditional Thai houses that is the Jim Thompson House. Having been completed in the late 50's it is said that the house's teak structures were transported to the present venue in Bangkok from all across Thailand.
A majority of the structures that form the house are the remains or remnants of old houses from remote villages in the country which were taken apart and carefully arranged on barges before being transported via rivers and klongs to be reassembled in Bangkok. The oldest quarter of the house is of course the 19th century drawing room which was brought over from the Ban Krua silk weaving hamlet while a crystal chandelier from a royal palace adds to the room's lustre. The kitchen also belongs to the same village and also dates back to the 19th century while the rest of the house contains structures from Ayutthaya and Pak Hai.
Decorated with priceless paintings, sculptures, porcelain items and beautiful collectibles the house's interiors are some of the most richly ornamented spaces in the city. As a serious antique connoisseur Jim Thompson acquired some of the finest examples of Southeast Asian creations on his many journeys to Ayutthaya and Nakorn Kasem. Some of the highlights within the premises include the 18th century Ayutthaya Buddha image and the 19th century Bangkok style carved wood panel which displays the classic scenes from Phra Malai‘s encounter in Indra's heaven in addition to other countless porcelain items.
The Jim Thompson Silk Museum is also located adjacent to the home and showcases the silk icon's flamboyant life story as well as his signature silk creations.
