APPNATION Report: Big Company Execs idea of Android Fragmentation
This is an article which pains me to write, but it is problem that must be analyzed, because I think that if something does not happen, it could mean trouble for the Android platform.
The matter is simple and comes from my time here at APPNATION, big company execs do not understand Android.
During APPNATION, I sat through 3 different keynotes with a high level executive with the Wall Street Journal, Pandora, ESPN, Disney-ABC and Major League Baseball. Each problem consisted of Android fragmentation as the main barrier to the development platform. All I should say except for Disney-ABC, which says nothing about Android in general, probably because their time is the biggest holder of anything else, Steve Jobs.
constantly hearing all the time, how the development of Android means that instead of creating applications, you need to create ten applications on the grounds that carriers and handset manufacturers Android to do that, when they get it. And somehow, each exec places the blame for it, right next to Google, which does not? The gold standard? as the MLB exec put it on a version of Android.
question that comes out of this show. Is it the fault of Google, that carriers and handset manufacturers to do what I do to Android? In an open source platform, is the creator of the platform, which is to blame for changes to a platform to meet the desires of the people who use it?
The short answer is my opinion? No?, And that is when management companies in the above-mentioned missing the point, while the inability to pay Android profitable enterprise for them.
Now in the clear here, I take the position. I do not determine blame at the feet of some of Googles fragmentation. From the beginning of the boom as a platform for Android, we went from one device in the G1 to 30, or in such a short time. Add to this that the exact date of entry into the fast Android was from 1.5 to 2.1 and have a hot mess that exists at the moment. Its true, I think the problem is improving as we see a slow movement to 2.1-2.2 in the pie chart, that puts Googles Android Developer periodically, and I think we will see improvements now that Google has declined to release the schedule once a year. But what is interesting to me is that companies do not mention that the same division exists in the world of the iPhone.
I currently own first gen iPod touch. Since the latest update ios4, Im no longer supported. There will be no more updates for me, or for first-generation iPhone owners, or even 2 II gen iPhone in this regard. What the iPhone 3G, or 3GS? Is there no fragmentation of the platforms in these units? Do not take any drastic differences in functionality than
Yes, feel free to talk to me think that Apple has no support? Ancient? devices. My G1 is two years, slightly older than my first gen iPod touch. G1 is STILL figured this problem of fragmentation, where Apple products seem to get a free ride, because it simply abandon their users.
No community members work as a team cyanogen mod on my ipod touch to make it work with the latest operating system update, I DO NOT! Apple does not allow! But the problem is ignored. Why? Because Apples products are money machines and multimedia content providers advertisers. Executives are harping on the division, because either can not understand or want to understand that the main problem now lies with the fragmentation of the carriers and handset manufacturers themselves.

On day 2 APPNATION event, I sat and listened to the executive of the Major League Baseball told us that as a platform for Android is too complicated to really make money off. That the reason we do not see the movie in our Android version of 2010 is a bat, because there is no standard video from Google for them to develop for. When I have the opportunity to interview him after the keynote, I go about it quite carefully, because I wanted to hear exactly the problem, rather than a general statement about the video.
I asked him to give me some difficulties, which were able to develop video-on Android. His answer? Problem with carrier Verizon release updates to their devices, which crashed droid of all video sources. According to him, Verizon released a small update to resolve several issues that somehow jacked for their programming through its programs.

What struck me as very ironic is that the Samsung Martin all developers, but asks you to come and talk to him, that they might contribute to their applications and content for Samsung Android device!
What I think it boils down to is that most of these companies has risen idle for lack of a better word. They have in the house developers who create iPhone applications quickly and give them to fix a good profit. Not their fault in this at all, I know that these companies are not altruistic, and now for the consumer, they are there to earn money for wealthy investors and owners richer. What can I find the error is that because you actually know the platform that you can be creative with, its like theyre afraid of a large number of possible Android platform gives them.
Over and over I heard from the direction of the Android development costs are prohibitive. I would like to see their budget sheets on this topic. Because I think the real problem is that none of these companies want to upset Stevie, and the risk of losing cash cow ios4 platform.
It will be interesting to see next year as APPNATION tune will change. These companies can not continue to write off as a platform for Androids that last quarter it boasts all the other mobile platform. You can not ignore the fact that 200,000 Android devices are activated every day. We want to be the force that they will eventually have to reckon with as a serious platform.
