Need someone that knows something about brakes on Freightliner Straight-trucks rented to fleets by RYDER?
Can someone tell me the difference between a push-rod and slack adjuster located on the brake drum? Plus what is there main objective? Is it the brake cylinder that is located on the axles? Plus, if you know where the Air Compressor is located at under the hood and what it looks like that would be tremendously helpful? If you could send me a link to a picture of them, that would be awesome?
Air brakes don't have a cylinder like hydrolic brakes.
And first - there is a spring brake system which has to be turned off, by applying air to the system. There MUST be air pressure (usually 60 PSI) in the system before the spring loaded parking brake will release. There will also be an air pressure guage on the dash somewhere.
The air compressor is mounted on the side of the engine close to the front and can be belt driven, or gear driven. It will look like a small lawn mower engine (with an air line instead of the spark plug).
Sometimes the compressor regulator will become stuck and not turn on. Suspect this if there is no air pressure buildup after starting engine.
You will need to get a couple of boards or bricks or something to block the tires with to keep vehicle from rolling before releasing the parking brakes and going under the truck. (Even if it is on level ground.)

The push rod looks like a bolt which is coming out of the brake air chamber (also known as the "can"). [marked as "rod" in diagram]
When the brake pedal is pushed, air goes into the "can" and makes the push rod move outward, which in turn pushes the slack adjuster, which turns the cam shaft, which expands the brake drums, which makes contact with the brake drum, which slows the vehicle.
The rod has a clevis type connector on the end which bolts to the slack adjuster.
The slack adjuster has an adjustment bolt head coming out of it usually on the side away from the push rod (but not always).

I had already typed a lot of instructions on how to do a brake adjustment, but decided to delete it and recomend that you just call Ryder and have them send help.
It has been a few years since I did any adjustments on a truck, and I don't know if they have different specs now, etc.
