Paiste Sabian
What drum setup are necessary for a drumset?

In order to do metal covers. Right now i have a tama drumset with 1 snare, 1 bass drum, 1 tom, 1 floor tom, 1 zildjan crash cymbal, 1 paiste ride cymbal, and a pair of sabian hi hat. I see some drummers on youtube like MachineGunSmith and JoeyJunior15 with huge drumsets so that made me curious to ask this question.

Huge drum sets are for stage appearance. Buddy Rich, one of the all time greats, said this in a Modern Drummer interview... if you need more than 4 drum and 3 cymbals you ain't worth a sh**. Obviously this is a bold statement but there is much truth to it. Trying to hone your skills on a large kit is very detrimental to your drumming. You actually have all you need right now except a double bass pedal. I despise double bass drumming with all my heart and soul, but if that's what floats your boat so be it. In metal it is almost a must to use double bass or a double bass pedal. One issue I have is that both ways force your hi-hat to be further from the snare than I like. There will be certain little licks down the road that will be very difficult unless the hi-hat is close to the snare. Also people that play double bass early in their career generally never develop a good right foot. Also many of them tend to over-use double bass and/or work on it so much that the rest of their drumming suffers. I know this is more than you asked for but just trying to keep you from falling into the same traps that many of my students have. Good luck.
