Question about recording drums?
Ok so my band and I are hitting the studio in about a month and I plan on using the following mics to record my drums: (All are Audix) 2 F15 condenser mics for overheads, F10 on snare, tom, and hihat, F12 on floor tom and F14 on bass drum.
I have heard the F10 gives the snare a real low end. My snare is a Pork Pie Maple Little Squeaker. Due to the nature of the snare, it is very poppish like a piccolo snare, will the mic affect this?
We play prog rock and due to the nature of the guitars, I need my snare to cut through the mix. Any tips for a first time recording musician?
BTW: I have heard of using a Shure SM57 for a snare but not sure if I want to shell out another $100.
Well, I don't think it's going to make that big of a difference. For your snare, imho all small-diaphragm condenser mics are going to be about the same in the end, due to mixing. Something to consider is that the snare drum must complement the song — for example, a dry, high-pitched snare like you're describing may cut through the guitars on stage, but they sound different in a recording, and usually sound silly on a heavy track, no matter how well it is recorded and mixed. I would show up with an alternative snare in reserve in case it doesn't sound right in the mix.
