What is an original chromagraphic print?
I have a large wall hanging by artist Robert Bidner. It is the front view of a steam locomotive with the number 88 on it. It is professionally framed by Greg Copeland,Fairfield,NJ.It says it is an original chromagraphic print. What confuses me are the words original and print together, can it be both?
The number 88 appears on the insignia of the locomotive itself (ie:the name of the locomotive) I cannot find any other number as in the signature or in the form of a fraction (xx/xxx).
Yes you can have an original print. Block print, wood cut print, lithographic print, screen print. What makes something original is that it is not duplicated or replicated by xerox or laser printer. (which can sometimes be quite convincing.)
The signature and the number (which should appear in the form of a fraction such as: 88/XXX for the 88th print produced out of X number of prints) are what authenticate the original. As in, this was originally created and printed by the artist, not a secondary art reproduction.
The only thing i cannot help you with is "chromagraphic". For all my years of art and training, I have no idea what that is. Research where you got the print, from who, and find out more about it. It may or may not be valuable.
