Should I spend more on a custom one ply snare drum?
will I get deeper tone from a stave or one ply drum vs. 6-8 plys?
have a 14x8 and a 14x9 pearl snare in my sights....should i look at custom made drums...in order to develop a true relationship with my instrument?
Usually Stave will get you a deeper tone.
The thinner the shell, the deeper the tone will be. Thicker shells are usually brighter. Look into getting a thin shell snare. My favorite snare is 8 ply Keller maple. I've also used a 6 ply with 6 ply re-rings and it's sounded great as well. Played a one ply solid shelled maple and a mahogany before and it wasn't a drastic improvement.
