Physics of Drums / musical instruments ?
After building a few Cajon-drums I want to build a set of conga drums. I'd liked to know more about the physics of sound / material used / Size / shape / tension etc. etc.
I have a hard time finding sites with good info, so all help is appreciated !
From experience and a background in physics, I can offer:
material: higher density = higher pitch.
size: larger cavity = lower pitch.
shape: round = gradual/even tones, sided = multiple/sudden tone changes.
tension: tighter = higher pitch
Drum tones emanate and reflect along the skin (similar to how waves from a rock travel in a swimming pool, reflecting from the walls). Tones heard are harmonics.
