How do I completely hook up a Condenser Microphone?
I have a CAD GXL2200 Studio Condenser Microphone with a 48 Volt Rolls Phantom Power Box, And that is it.. Please tell me step by step what I need to Record with my Laptop. Thank You.
You need hardware and software.
Most computers come with a sound card or have a sound card's functions integrated on the mother board. Normally, such sound cards offer a line in, line out, headphone, and mic jacks. These are usually 1/8" jacks. These are not suitable for serious recording.
What you want is an audio interface. There are many such devices and they come in a wide variety of features and prices. Since you're working with a laptop, you'll want a sound card that hooks to your computer through either USB, Firewire (if you computer has a Firewire port) or through a PCMCIA card (if you laptop accepts them). You probably won't need the phantom power box because most audio interfaces have phantom power on board. So you'll plug the mic directly into the audio interface, which is attached to your computer however the manufacturer specifies.
The audio interface will come with drivers (software that lets the interface communicate with the computer). You'll need to install the drivers.
Then you'll need recording software. Many audio interfaces come with a free lightweight version of professional recording software like Sonar, Cubase, or ProTools. Start with whatever comes with it, and follow the directions for whatever you get.
A lot of online retailers sell audio interfaces. Try sweetwater.com, musiciansfriend.com, or zzounds.com. You can get entry-level audio interfaces at best buy, too.
Good luck with your recording.
