March Has Arrived!
The much dreaded Month of March comes every year and the Examination Fever starts to spread among the students just like a Flu. Nobody is immune to it, though the symptoms and the severity of exam fever vary from individual to individual. Some start to worry even when they have enough time at their hands while other tend to be pressurised just when the date of the first examination is almost is knocking on their door. Some show clear physical symptoms of anxiousness and some even develop Fever and Nausea. Some give up and some resort to shortcuts and some resort to self physical abuse to the extent that they may even commit suicide. The most affected one's are those who have a reputation at stake and especially those who are appearing for Board Exams. Even as i write these lines my heart is beating fast as i am having those images in front of me, when i myself was passing through Crunch Time. It really takes a nerve to handle such a pressure but what i observe today that the pressure that i took as a student is nothing compared to what today's student face. Present curriculum is more advanced than what we had then and examinations have become like Gladiator Games where you do or die. Students are being prepared like Jockeys before a Horse race. You have to be number one and gain certain amount of percentage to get admission in a prestigious institution. If you falter then your whole pride is shattered and at most times beyond repair. It is virtually a Need For Speed Race.
So what makes these examinations so dreadful that they take such a heavy toll on students physical and mental health. Let's analyse the causes.
Board Examination Tag – The so called ‘Board Examinations' tend to have a larger than life image that they send shiver down the spines of even the most brilliant minds. Board examinations have gained a rather nasty reputation to such a extent that students tend to avoid them all together by committing suicides.
Parent Pressure – A common observation during the dreaded days is that the parents are far more worried than their own children. They want their children to be Doctors, Engineers etc. This tension tends to be infectious and unwillingly the students are infected by the worry bug. Parents worry translates into consistent warnings and certain Do's and Don'ts are enforced in a strict manner. This confines a student's freedom who feel caged, this further results in loss of focus and short span of attention.
Peer Pressure – In this overly and unduly competitive world students make sure that they are at the ‘Top Spot' and they want to remain like that. Sometimes they put up a challenge to their fellows or are pitted against each other by their own classmates who boast and brag about their respective candidates. Those who have been at the top, gain an image of a "Topper". By default it becomes a responsibility of the reputed one to protect his/her image at all times as that is what is expected of them owing to their repute which will be challenged every now and then.
Careless Attitude – More often than not there are some who don't give a damn about studies in the beginning. They will bunk classes and pay no attention to what is being taught. But they press the "Panic Button" when the time comes really close and there is no time to lose. At times they are clueless what to study and what not to study.
Lack of Proper Guidance and Counselling – Students today need what they lack the most - Proper Guidance and Counselling. Most schools will cover the syllabus but they don't have the keys to open the "Lock of Guidance". They are told to work hard and burn the midnight lamp. But they are not told how to go about at doing all these things. Parents themselves are busy and are out of touch with what is being taught. Some parents cannot afford extra coaching and the students who need proper guidance suffer in the end.
Too many Activities or No Chill-Out-Time – At times some students tend to have far more interests than they can handle. They go for school then for extra coaching, attend tennis sessions, do homework and revise all before sleeping. So many activities in one day can take a great toll on even on an adult. While some have too much some don't have anything. There is a complete ban on T.V., playing outdoors or even a casual chat with a neighbouring friend. Restricting these activities puts additional stress on the students.
The Plethora of pressure caused by the examinations is undue and unjust. It creates a state of panic and gives mental scars on young minds. More often than not examinations always remain a burden and instead of bringing out the best in them they make the "Fear of March" more prominent in them.
