Is it right to say "spiritual" in relation to Theravada Buddhism?
I was writing how Theravada monks give "spiritual" guidance to the laity... but it doesn't sound right, since a 'spirit' or 'soul' doesn't fit in with Anatta. What would be a more appropriate term?
yeah you're right 'spiritual' sounds unfit for Buddhism. But Buddhists do use it for a different reason not related to spirit or soul - I don't really know what they mean by that word.
The word 'paramita' is a good choice. Paramita is to do with development toward the capability for ceasing suffering. E.g. to kill a big fire, one needs a lot of water, sand, etc. Just like that, one needs the ten paramitas to kill the sufferings and to be able to see the reality of existence and lead oneself to freedom.
The ways the Theraveda monks give guidance to people are various. However, a serious monk would strongly emphasize on the way to keep the mind pure (from greed, aversion, and all other kilesas) and the way toward nibbanna (nirvana). They would emphasize on how to develop a Buddhist mindset. They would give some good advises on how to handle daily activities without making akusala.
Generally the advises will be about the right ways to live a life to lead oneself to happiness.
