resonant drum heads & bass drum?
can you use Evans G1 Clear Batter Drumhead as a bootom head on a tom & it still sound good? how can i get a good SOLED thump out of my bass drum?
I use the G1 heads for my resonant heads and they sound great.
For the bass drum I use an Evans EMAD 2 batter head, and I place a strip of felt under the resonant head to get rid of the overtones.
It is important not to tune the bass drum heads too loose. If the bass heads are too loose, the bass will be quiet. Also, make sure that the heads are tuned evenly. If the head is tuned differently at each lug, you will not get a good thump.
If you don't want to buy a EMAD 2 head, there are other options. Placing a pillow in the drum can give you a thump, but it will also make the drum much quieter.
This is what I did before I had the EMAD head:
-Put some foam packing peanuts in a large trash bag (30 or 45 gallon)
-Only fill the bag about half full. If the bag is filled tight, it will silence your bass drum.
--Place in the bass drum and check that the bag loosely rests on both heads. The bag should fill the drum less than half way.
This has the same effect as a pillow, but since it is not as heavy it will not silence the drum as much.
